Calculate. Report. Reduce.
Vert is carbon accounting software for individuals and organizations. It turns activity into greenhouse gas emissions, writes a report you can stand behind, and points to reductions that follow from the figures.
01
Calculate greenhouse gas emissions.
An account starts with activity, not with a slogan. You record what happened in a period: energy used, distance traveled, goods purchased, waste handled, and — for an organization — the operations inside the boundary you set.
Vert applies published emission factors and keeps the factor next to the result. A tonne that cannot be traced to an activity and a factor does not belong in the report.
- 01Energy — electricity, heat, and fuel
- 02Travel — flights, rail, and road
- 03Commuting — how people get to work
- 04Purchasing — goods and services you can evidence
- 05Waste — what leaves the boundary
- 06Operations — sources an organization owns or controls
02
Produce a report.
The report is the account, set in a form another person can read. It states the period, the boundary, the total, and the categories that make up the total. For organizations, categories can be arranged as scopes 1, 2, and the parts of scope 3 that are material and can be evidenced.
Nothing decorative is added to the number. If a factor was updated, the report says so. If a category was left out because the data was not good enough, the report says that too.
- 01Period and boundary, stated at the top
- 02Total greenhouse gas emissions
- 03Category breakdown, with factors named
- 04Scopes, when the account is organizational
- 05Notes on what was excluded, and why
- 06A reduction list tied to those categories
03
Find solutions to reduce carbon.
Reduction follows the inventory. Vert ranks practical changes by their estimated effect on your account: a different energy contract, fewer flights, a purchasing choice with a lower factor, a process that uses less fuel.
Each suggestion names the category it would change. You can accept it, set it aside, or replace the assumption with a better one. The aim is to emit less — not to decorate a total after the fact.
Vert is not an offset marketplace. Offsets are not a substitute for an account, and they are not the product.
Method
The arithmetic, kept visible.
Activity multiplied by an emission factor gives emissions. The same structure is used for a household and for an organization; the boundary and the categories change, the discipline does not.
Reports use the scope structure common in greenhouse gas accounting. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources you own or control. Scope 2 covers purchased energy. Scope 3 covers other indirect emissions in the value chain, where they matter and where they can be supported.
Use the same method next period, and the two reports can be compared. A change in the total then means a change in activity or a change in factors — and the report will tell you which.
Ready for a first period.
Individuals and organizations begin the same way: a boundary, a period, and the activity inside it.
